El Pinell de Brai
Located on the border of the region with the Baix Ebre, the municipality of Pinell de Brai has a mostly mountainous landscape, formed by the mountains of Cavalls and Pàndols where the highest peak is Punta Alta, 705 m high. The Canaletes river, which rises in Els Ports, crosses the south of the municipality, near the mouth of the Ebro. The houses in the historic center are located on top of a rock cliff more than 100 m high, on the edge of the precipice, so they are known as hanging houses. The streets of the village are steep and irregular, a testament to a medieval past.
Walking through the town
The most representative building in El Pinell is the Celler Cooperatiu, also called the Catedral del Vi, the work of the architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunet, a disciple of Gaudí. It is of noucentista style. On the façade there is a frieze, the work of the painter Xavier Nogués. Inside, there are unique elliptical diaphragm arches.
The houses in the old town are located on a cliff, which makes them known as the Hanging Houses.
We can also visit the church of Sant Llorenç, built in 1770. Next to the church is the Les Veus del Front interpretation center, related to the spaces of the Battle of the Ebro.
