Culture and historical memory

Iberians, Romans, Saracens, Templars and Hospitallers have left their mark on Terra Alta.

The population of Gandesa suffered seven sieges by the Carlists and Republicans and Nationals fought in the decisive Battle of the Ebro.

The archaeological remains, the Renaissance, Romanesque, Baroque and Modernist buildings; the medieval layout of our towns and the still visible witnesses of the civil war, attest that this is a land full of history and stones that preserve memory.

The Battle of the Ebro

In the summer of 1938 the region of Terra Alta became the scene of the longest, bloodiest and most decisive battle of the Spanish Civil War. For 115 days the People’s Army of the Republic and the revolted troops of General Franco clashed on an 800 km2 battlefield. A battle that marked the lives of thousands of people and the territory where it took place.
